Centro Antico and Storico


The antique centre displays the layers of history that occurred in this area of the city and the
layout is exactly in keeping with the original greek plans of Neapolis. This area of the city is
overflowing with monuments and churches such as San Lorenzo Maggiore. This church is in a
square that used to be the old roman marketplace. It is full of excellent tombs and frescoes
and underneath which you can find important archaeological remains that can be visited. Via
dei Tribunali leads up to the Castel Capuano which is the oldest fort in the city that fronts the
port of the same name. The area hosts the Duomo and the famous spacca napoli or split
naples. The area known as the centro storico is a natural extension of the centro antico and
contains excellent representations of medieval and renaissance expression along with the
presence of the Spanish and the bourbons. The area is divided into the Spanish quarter
comprises via Toledo with its fantastic seventeeth century works and the church of Sant'Anna
that is a treasure trove of renaissance work. The whole area is speckled with piazza or square
that are a renaissance dream. The zona dei Vergini and delle Fontanelle are ancient burials
places and of much interest. Archeology fans should not miss the Museo Archeologico
Nazionale which is one of the most important museums of its kind.
