EATING OUT


Welcome to the city where you will begin your love affair with food. If you continue south of
along the coast you will no doubt formalize the union in Sorrento. Neapolitan cuisine prides
itself on fresh produce enhanced by the process of cooking in a simple and encouraging
manner. It would be difficult to recommend dishes in such a city so try whatever takes your
fancy in any one of the family run restaurants but there are two musts on the list of which one
is, of course, the pizza. How could you not eat a pizza in the land where the pizza started life!
The other must is fresh seafood, shrimps tossed in a pan with garlic are among the
recommendations but feel free. It's hard to go wrong.
Alla Brace, Via S. Spaventa 14-16. Closed Sun. Good, cheap alternative just off Piazza
Garibaldi that has well-priced pasta dishes and main courses.
Antica Trattoria da Carmine, via Tribunali 330. Closed Sun. An unobtrusive trattoria which
boasts a great central location and serves up tasty standards - Don Carmine's seafood is
particularly good.
Antonio & Antonio, Via Francesco Crispi 89. The place to go to eat a real pizzas that hangs
over the plate in a pleasant atmosphere.
Bellini, Via Santa Maria di Constantinopoli 80. This is one of the city's oldest and so most
famous restaurants. Like most places, the pizzas are good but you may want to try the
seafood here. It is a wonderful place to sit outside and enjoy a warm pleasant evening.
Brandi , Salita Sant'Anna di Palazzo 1-2, off Via Chiaia. This is where the pizza margherita in
theory started life in 1889 in honour of the visiting Queen Margherita of Savoy. The
atmosphere is friendly, you can sit outside in the narrow street and the pizzas are, of course,
the best.
Canterbury, Via Ascensione 6. Despite the name this is one of the best value places around
especially for the excellent pasta dishes with such inventions as the Penne alla Vodka. The
Italians do love to throw alcohol into their food, but then who doesn't?
Di Matteo, via Tribunali 94. This place was made more famous by its vistitor Bill Clinton who
stopped by in 1994 during the G7 summit. It is definitely worth a visit. If it's good enough for
him…..
Da Peppino Avellinese, Via S. Spaventa 31. Closet Saturday durino the winter. This is a
favourite among the locals and is renowned for its fantastic antipasti.
Da Tonino, Via Santa Teresa a Chiaia 47. Closed Sun.This place is renowned for its large tables
where everyone gets pushed together. One of the recommended dishes is seppie in umido or
steamed cuttlefish.
Umberto , Via Alabardieri 30-31. Closed Wed. For something a little more upmarket this is
popular choice with an old fashioned appeal and wonderful food. Suprisingly moderate prices.
